Building a pond on your property is a great way to increase your home’s value, add interest to your landscaping, and invite wildlife to your property. While installing a pond might seem simple, there are many simple mistakes that can make your pond difficult to maintain, unable to harbor wildlife, and even dangerous for you and your family.

Mistakes to avoid when building your new pond

Here are 4 mistakes to avoid when building your new pond:

1. Not Digging Deeply Enough

When building your pond, it’s important to ensure that it’s deep enough. Although a shallow pond might seem easier to maintain, unfortunately, ponds that are too shallow are susceptible to temperature fluctuations, making it difficult for fish and other wildlife to survive.

2. Making it Too Small

Although constructing a small pond might seem like an enticing way to reduce costs and make your pond easier to manage, in reality, small ponds are more time-intensive to manage than large ponds. This is because it’s more difficult to maintain a sufficient level of water in small ponds than it is in large ones.

3. Poor Location

One of the easiest mistakes to make during the pond-building process is choosing a poor location. Selecting the right location for your new pond can make all the difference in your ability to enjoy and maintain it.

There are two factors to consider when choosing where to build your pond. First, it’s best to select a spot on your property where you and the other members of your household will frequently see and enjoy your new pond, rather than building it in a rarely visited area. Building your pond in an area of your property where you’ll rarely see it is a waste of money and will likely lead to it being forgotten.

Second, it’s important to choose a location that doesn’t collect a lot of water. Low spots on your property are susceptible to gathering water runoff and other pollutants. Although you might be tempted to build your pond in an area that already collects water, low-quality water often does more harm than good, killing your plants and making it difficult for fish to survive.

4. Creating Steep Sides

Another common pond building mistake is making the sides too steep. When designing a pond, planning for shallow areas is very important. Ponds with steep drop-offs (similar to swimming pools), are difficult to maintain and make it difficult to stack stones inside of the pond. Additionally, aquatic plants thrive in a foot or less of water, so steep drop-offs make it very difficult for wildlife to thrive in your pond.
